Radio Silence Interrupted

I haven't intentionally been ignoring the blog, but life happens.  Actually, a lot of life happens.  In the little over a month that I have been gone, we have had family visit, gone to visit some family, spring break, kid free Vegas vacation, death in the family, general craziness, spring sports, cub scouts, etc.

With all that has been going on, I just haven't been into it.  I lost the groove I was operating in and now that spring has sprung here in Texas, I am starting to get back into my groove.  This means I am going to try and not neglect the blog.  I have lots of things I want to share, but need to do a lot of editing of photos.

On my hiatus, I also evaluated why I blog.  I do it because I want to document all my creative endeavors.  I don't want to use the blog as a major source of income, however, if you want to purchase through my Amazon affiliate link, I would appreciate it.  I think I have made a whole $60 so far!  It went towards purchasing more creative stuff to fuel my habit.  I also really enjoy connecting with other people, so come follow me on Facebook and I promise I will start posting there too.

I want to share with you a peek at the best part of the kid free vacation, the west rim of the Grand Canyon.

This was standing on the Ant Hill looking out onto Guano Point.
Don't worry, there will be a lot more photos of the Grand Canyon to come, among some photos of a few crafts and my newest creation that was auctioned off at the preschool.

...And I'm Back

I didn't mean to take a holiday hiatus from the blog, but it happened.  Now that the kids are back in school and we are all finally healthy, I will have the time and energy to pour back into the blog.

So, what have I been up to?

Aside from the normal holiday chaos of Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as everyone in the house getting sick (myself twice within two weeks), I built my husband an amazing gift this year for Christmas.

The kids and I took a day at the zoo with friends and did the WHOLE Houston zoo!  That takes over 5 hours...it was a long but enjoyable day.

And I have been playing with one of my new toys, the Fuji Instax.  Loving it!  Best photo I have ever taken of my dog, Doozer.

So, I am back!  Going to try and keep strong...so long as I can keep sickness out of the house.

2nd Place!

I shared this over on Facebook last week, but need to share it here too.  I got second place and am more than ecstatic about that, especially after seeing the company I was competing against.  So, here are the top three finishers in the contest over at Jerry's Artarama Houston.

1st Place - Brad Letney

2nd Place - Yours truly - Erin Morey

3rd Place - Janice Smith

A big thanks to the crew over at Jerry's for putting on a great contest and show.  A big congrats to my fellow winners.  It was great to meet many of the contestants and I was so excited that my family was able to accompany me to the show.

Photos are all courtesy of Jerry's Artarama Houston.

September Best

Wow, this past few weeks has just kicked me in the keister!  Butted heads with my son's elementary school over some safety issues, traveling husband, birthdays, and I ended up sick with strep throat and a sinus infection.  I haven't had strep since I was 10!  Seriously!  BTW, I had my tonsils out at 10 and they both grew back to full size.  I will gladly get them yanked again so I don't have to go through the hell of having them swell to the size of golf balls.  Thankful no one else in the house caught what I had.

Project Gallery Is Live!

I have been working pretty hard behind the scenes here trying to figure out how to build a project gallery.   After combing the internet and many blogs, I finally found a tutorial that was very user friendly and I was successful at using.  Tuula over at The Thrifty Rebel has the one that I used.  Check it out if you are interested in building a project gallery on Blogger and show her some love.

Now my project gallery is still a work in progress as I go through 3 years of consistent blogging and locating everything I have done.  I will be updating it frequently and hope to keep it updated as I go once I am all caught up.

I would love it if you go check it out and let me know what you think!

Back Up Your Blog

With all the changes that the site has been undergoing, I thought I would show you how to back up not only your blog, but your template as well.  This will definitely give you the security you need in order to play around with your blog and make changes.

The blog back up is 4 easy steps.
1. Select Settings
2. Under Settings, select Other
3. At the top of the Other page, select Export Blog
4. Click Download Blog and Save.

If you need to import your saved blog, instead of clicking on Export, click on Import and select the file.  Easy peasy!

Backing up your template is just as easy.

1. Select Template
2. At the top right hand side, select Backup/Restore
3. In the pop up box, click Download full template, then Save

If you need to reload your template, instead of clicking on the download, below that select the Browse option, select your saved template and click Upload.

Feel free to play with your blog without the fear of losing it all or screwing it up.

Ch-Ch-Changes!

Summer has almost come to a close.  School starts in a few weeks and that is going to give me a lot more time to dedicate to creating, the blog, and all the other awesome ideas I have floating around in my head.  I also have some exciting news to share, but not just yet.  You will have to wait until next week.

I am making a few improvements around the blog if you haven't already noticed.  I have added a a contact me form on the right hand side so you don't have to search for my e-mail address.  Over there you will also see a link to my new facebook page for this blog.  You should totally like it.  I know, I am finally jumping on the technology bandwagon.  I even got a smart phone!  No joke, it's about 5 weeks old.  My very first one!

It's been suggested to me that my blog is not too user friendly for finding older projects.  I would have to agree and will be changing that.  Hoping to get a project gallery up and running in the near future.  I don't have a deadline for that as I know it will be rather time consuming.  I have been blogging for almost 3 years!  Wow!  It's hard to believe it's been that long.  Lots of projects to sort.

I also updated my profile photo.  Maben is getting to be a rather good photographer.  I am hoping to get a friend of mine to do a fun and creative photo shoot in the near future as well.  Lots of ideas, let's see how many of them I can get rolling.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, likes, dislikes about all the changes, please let me know.  I don't just blog for myself, I blog to connect with other creative people and your opinion matters to me.

Busy, Busy, Busy

I want to apologize for my lack of posting.  Spring is here and it keeps me busy.  Between all the end of the year stuff starting to pop up, getting some commissions done, helping my hubby with some graphic design stuff, getting the yard and garden in order and a few building projects...it doesn't leave me with much time for anything else, including blogging.  I hope that in the next two weeks, things will have calm down, at least a little.  So here is a peek at a few things I have been up to.
My hubby asked for me to make him this graphic for a speech he is going to be giving.  My husband dreams of becoming a paid public speaker and I help him when I can.  You can check out some of his lessons on leadership over at his blog here.

Once upon a time, I made a Fence Picket American Flag for a friend.  When she saw that I did a Texas one, she commissioned one of those from me.  6 months later I finally got it done!  At least I got it done, right?  Sorry it took so long friend!

And here's a sneak peek at the big build I am currently working on.  Hoping, HOPING, to get it done by this weekend.  Can you tell what it is?

Do you find yourself insanely busy every spring?  Is it just me?  Please tell me it's not just me!

Update on DIY Bird Feeder

I've been wanting to write this post for a while as I have received many, MANY, questions regarding my most popular post from my blog.  I figured I would address as many as I can remember.  You can find the tutorial for this bird feeder here.

Q:  What kinds of birds will it attract?

A:  I have seen sparrows, cardinals, blue jays, wrens, woodpeckers, chickadees and doves.  The type of bird you will attract depends on the type of feed you use, your location and the time of year.  I change my feed almost every time I fill it.

Q:  Will it attract squirrels?

A:  Yes, but they have not been much of a problem for me.  The size of my upper plate makes it difficult for them to get into the bowl.  They typically slide off and fall.  A few times of that and they stopped trying, that was until the lawn mower got parked close enough for them to jump from the handle of the lawn mower into the bowl.  I moved the lawn mower.  On occasion they will scavenge on the ground, but the doves and blue jays like to attack the squirrels.  It's pretty awesome.

Since it's fairly squirrel proof, I am not making squirrels obese.  (Seriously been accused of that, it makes me laugh).

Q:  Will it attract rats and mice?

A:  I'm sure it could, but that also depends on if they have areas to nest.  The feral cat population and the fact that I have two dogs has made sure that rats and mice have not been a problem.

Q:  Does the type of drill bit matter?

A:  YES!!!  If you are doing this to ceramic plates, you need a specialty bit to cut through glass/ceramic.  If you are cutting through plastic or melamine (mine was done with melamine) a standard HSS drill bit will do.  Please use my trick and place a block of wood underneath to help with blow out/chip out.

Q:  Do you need drainage holes?

A:  I haven't needed them.  My bird feeder is under a covered porch.

Q:  Do the birds poop in the bowl?  How often do you have to clean the bowl?

A:  In my experience, not yet.  I have only taken down the feeder twice to clean it.  They keep it fairly tidy.  More often than anything, I need to tip the bowl over to get rid of some of the seed husks, if I forget, the sparrows are more than happy to throw them out, then I just need to sweep them up off the porch.

Q:  Will this stop birds from migrating?  Will it make them dependent on the feeder?

A:  NO!  There is a great Q&A from the experts themselves over at Cornell University's Ornithology Department about those very questions and others.  They even do a backyard bird count to track birds every year.  Check out Project Feeder Watch.

Q:  What is the downside of having the feeder?

A:  The birds like to hang out on my patio table and they do poop on that and the chairs.  We eat outside so infrequently that I thoroughly wash the chairs and ta ble (and disinfect it) before eating off of it.  You know what though?  They still pooped on the table and chairs before the bird feeder, it just happens more frequently now.

Q:  What do you like most about your bird feeder?

A:  I love my little Carolina Wren that comes to inform me when the feeder in empty.  I get some pretty loud chirps right at my kitchen window in the morning when the feeder is empty.  The wren will even watch me do the dishes sometimes.  It's really neat.

If I inspired you to create a bowl and plate bird feeder I would love to see photos of it!  I would love to feature your bird feeder with your name and a link to your blog (if you have one).  You can e-mail me.  erin.morey@gmail.com

Also, did I miss any of your questions?  Leave them in the comments below and if there are enough, I will do another Q&A post.   Thanks for all your love for my bird feeder!  I love it and hope you created one and love it too!

Update

Sorry I have been MIA.  I have a few updates to post.  First, I was on VACATION!!!  I try to refrain from posting where I am and for how long for obvious reasons.  It was an amazing family vacation in Cape Cod, MA that was shared with grandparents, a great grandmother, brother, future sister-in-law and other various family members on my husband's side of the family.  Many, many photos to come, but here is one of my favorites that I have edited so far that I call, "Hi Tourists!"

Mother humpback whale with calf, both fin slapping

Sigh, only about 1000 photos to go through and choose which ones to edit.   This might take a while.

Second update, I just squeaked by in the last round of So You Think You're Crafty.  Thanks to any and all who voted for my Manly Pillow Covers.  I was very proud of them, but realized that I NEED to take better photos and my house is not a great place to take photos.  My house is so naturally dark and I think that played a key factor into the lack of votes for my project.  Mental note to self...take better photos!  I could be completely wrong, maybe the men's dress shirt refashion has been over done.  This was my take on it and I may have showed up late to this party.

I am so happy that I made it through to next week, I cannot wait to show you what I came up with for the theme of, "Summer Bounty."  I will be back to posting rather regularly now that I am back.  Look for an update of photos for my Photo 366 tomorrow.

What I'm Working On

I have not been blogging much as I seem to have a million and one things currently going on.  I have a tutorial in the works that I can't seem to get complete.  It will happen one day.  I have two large projects that I am working on for my son's preschool fair.  See one of them below.  It will blow your mind when it's done (I hope).

I still have my stained glass piece to complete.  That probably won't happen until after the preschool fair stuff is done as I am focusing my efforts there.

I have also had to do some graphic design.  Here is one of the pieces that is currently being reviewed.

I have also been scouting locations for my photography group to do photos in the bluebonnets.  I cannot wait for them to be in full bloom!

So, there you have it.  This whole year of creativity is wonderful, but it is taking a serious hit on the time I have for my blog.  So in conclusion, I need to finish a lot of projects, stop neglecting my blog and keep on keeping on.

Does anyone have this many projects in the works too?

Leucistic Red-tailed Hawk

So, I have been a little obsessed lately.  Since spotting that beautiful white hawk, I have been bound and determined to see it again and identify the type of bird it is.  Well, I hit the jackpot.  I have seen the white beauty two more times and the last time, I got some phenomenal photos!!!

I also put a lot of photos out to a lot of people to help me with the identification.  Well, the authority on birds, Cornell University answered.  They confirmed for me that this beauty is a leucistic red-tailed hawk.

Enter biology lesson here:  Leucisim is not albinism.  It is a condition where a genetic mutation has happened that causes a reduction in melanin (what gives the feathers color).  The bird when affected with this will either have pale plumage or white plumage.  It can affect it's whole body or just parts. You can read more about this condition here.

Now I promise I am not just going to fill my blog with photography, I am working on a preschool class craft and a stained glass window.  Both of which are taking a bit of my time and I am not ready to post anything about them just yet.  Also, bird hunting has been forcing my little guy to take naps in the afternoon, because he is being confined in the car with me.  Colton is attempting to give up naps and I'm just not ready for that.

I hope everyone has a tremendous weekend.  It will be a busy one for me, but hopefully by the end of this weekend, I will have a stained glass window to show for it!

A Little of This and a Little of That

This past week or so has found me in a tailspin of busy, busy, busy.  It seems like I have had a million places to go and a million things to get done.  So far this week I have been working on 1/2 dozen of the redneck wineglasses to fulfill an order.  Find out how to make them yourself here.

I am also working on an order for a fence picket flag.  And I thought that since I was doing one flag already, I might as well get around to doing a Texas one.  I will let you know how that turns out.  If you want to see how I make an American Flag out of fence pickets, go here.

I have also decided that I am going to enter a photo contest for Vermont Magazine.  So I am selecting photos and need to get that in the mail ASAP!  I am also working on making myself a drop in insert to protect my camera so I can lug it around in my purse.  I am really hating my camera bag.  Almost impossible to carry that and the diaper bag at the same time.  The messenger style camera bag is also starting to hurt my shoulder.  How I love my camera.  If you missed it, I am toting around a Pentax KX in red.

I am also in the middle of a Biggest Loser competition with some friends of mine.  So that means my butt is hitting the gym a LOT more, plus I have been cashing in some personal training sessions that my hubby got me for my birthday.  My butt had spasms yesterday...seriously!  You can check out part of my weight loss journey here.

Oh, and the kids.  Yeah, the kids...I've been trying to keep them busy, happy, healthy, fed and mostly entertained.  I also try to squeeze my hubby somewhere in all this when he isn't stuck at work and we both aren't completely exhausted.  We are doing two dates this week...hoping to catch up with the hubby!

I'm tired.  So I want to apologize if there is any slacking in the posting.  I never understood how summer vacation was so frantic until Maben went off to preschool for a year and that ended with summer vacation.  Now...I get it!  Hoping to play catch up when Maben is in camp next week.

I Feel Official

I have business cards now!  They came in the mail.  I feel so official.  I can't wait to hand them out to...ummm...EVERYBODY!

I found that I love blogging, it's something I look forward to and has caused me to put my creativity in the fore front of my mind.  It sat on the back burner for a while and I found that blogging has helped me keep it up front.  I also love all the people I have been connecting with because of blogging.  You all are so wonderful and nice.  Many of you help inspire me to keep going and try new things.

I have a lot of projects in the works and can't wait to share them all.  Of course, I need to finish a lot of them.  My creativity has exploded to the point where I have TOO many great ideas and I want to do them all.  My sketchbook is slowly getting filled with sketches and ideas.  It also travels almost everywhere with me.  I am so happy I put a pocket on it to hold a few pens and pencils.

(Check out the post on my sketch book cover here)

The project which I will be wrapping up today...

That's right, the Preschool Bench will be wrapped up and finished today.  It's loaded up in the back of my car to go to the preschool for some hand printing.  I am looking forward to sharing the finished product with all of you.  I am so excited about getting this finished!  If you haven't been keeping up with the Preschool Bench, you can check that out here.
